Grief and Loss

stressGrief is the normal process we experience after any loss. Often we think that grief is reserved only in the instance of a death, however, any change in our lives can create a loss that may require grieving. A loss can be the death of a loved one, the loss of a pet, moving to a new place, changing jobs, changing schools, graduating, a break-up or divorce, a miscarriage, infertility, as well as the loss of a part of ourselves through change and growth (maturation).

Grief can be painful but necessary in order to process and cope with a loss. It is a natural reaction which we usually pass through and heal from. Sometimes however, we don’t move through the grief process as regularly as may be expected, and could benefit from help.

It is recommended to seek help if you notice:

  • Your grief has turned into a depression
  • You have suicidal ideations or “dark” thoughts
  • Your grief isn’t getting better over time, but stays the same or worsens
  • You notice you are “stuck” in anger, sadness, guilt, sensitivity, denial, questioning, negativity, or have trouble letting go
  • You think you’ll never get better
